14th August 2019 Hiking - Walking: UFO Trail, Rendlesham Forest Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Wednesday 14th August – walk ***** UFO Trail Rendlesham Forest – sunny periods. Tuesday 13th August. Shingle Street, Bawdsey Quay and Rendlesham Forest. Had a good night at the campsite in Rendlesham Forest and were soon joined by our neighbour Arlo when he wanders over from his near-by tent:) With the forecast good for today we headed over to the coast at yet another dead-end, Shingle Street, Suffolk is full of dead-end roads! It is lovely here, a long shingle bay remote and quiet where the River Alde enters the sea - a popular spot with kitesurfers, Rob took his kit but the wind was offshore sadly:( The only thing here is a Martello Tower, a row of coastguard cottages and a mix of holiday shacks. We park and walk down to the sea which is like a mill pool and have a nice hour relaxing in the sun and throwing stones in. We then walk up to the lagoon, where you used to learn to kitesurf but now it is very small, past the line of white shells that run from the cottages to the sea. Back in the car it’s a short drive around to Bawdsey Quay and we park in one of our favourite overnight spots. We manage to get prime spot together and Arlo has a snooze. We have lunch before having a lovely afternoon on the small sandy beach, building sandcastles, drawing pics in the sand and playing in the River Deben mud! We then walk up to the quay for an ice cream while watching the action on the river. It’s then back to the campsite for tea and relax in the van. Top day enjoying the best of Suffolk:) Wednesday 14th August – walk ***** UFO Trail Rendlesham Forest. Our second and last night in the campsite and are woken by the sound of Arlo crying in the tent, Mag makes him a bottle as the milk is in our fridge. As we are awake, we decide to make the most of the early morning quiet. So, we dress quickly and head off for a walk in Rendlesham Forest and in the end we do the 3-mile UFO trail. Loads of rabbit’s scatter as we leave the campsite. The heather is in bloom and the pines are dark and spooky but we see no deer:( We find a good forest game, a load of spinners on posts with the aim to get from one end to the other depending on what colour you spin, like a maze. We will bring Arlo here later. We see the odd bird and squirrel but wildlife is a little thin on the ground. We see the metal flying saucer before returning to the van and are soon joined by our neighbour Arlo again! He greets Mag with ‘Hello neighbour Granny’ :) Breakfast, followed by another walk over to the adventure park, the highlight for Arlo being a man up a cherry picker trimming trees with a chainsaw. We play the spinner game, climb around the assault course, climb up the hollow tree trunk and on to the swings and zip wire. Then back to the van as we had to leave the campsite by midday, while Rob, Hannah and Arlo are staying for a further two nights, sadly it rained all afternoon so they went to Christchurch Park and Pizza express in Ipswich!
